Medtronic Infuse® Bone Graft Lawsuits
Our attorneys are reviewing potential bone graft lawsuits on behalf of people who were treated with Medtronic Infuse® Bone Graft in the cervical spine or neck. Off-label uses of the Medtronic Infuse® Bone Graft have been linked to serious complications including excessive swelling of the neck that can lead to compressed airways; difficulty breathing, speaking and swallowing; nerve damage; and respiratory depression.
Medtronic has been accused of promoting and marketing use of the Infuse® Bone Graft in the cervical spine (neck), even though it has only been approved for use in the lumbar spine (lower back). The company has also been accused of withholding information about the potential dangers associated with using the device in the cervical spine.
What is the Infuse® Bone Graft Used For?
Medtronic's Infuse® Bone Graft is used during surgery to stimulate bone growth. It was approved for limited use in the lumbar spine, specifically for degenerative disc disease. It was also approved for some dental procedures in 2002.
Reports indicate that Medtronic may have encouraged use of the Infuse® Bone Graft for off-label uses, even though it was aware of an increased risk of serious side effects when used in the neck area. Problems associated with using the device to promote bone growth in the cervical spine include:
- Problems swallowing
- Difficulty breathing
- Compression of the airway
- Respiratory depression
- Nerve damage
- Death
